Occupy Book

Final Occupy Project- Due Wednesday, December 14th- 500 Points
The purpose of this project is to have each student explain the reasons behind why the Occupy movement is happening. We would like you to review your notes from the presentations and class work to determine your answers. We want you to understand what is happening in our country and to determine what you think is the important information.
The format for this project is a simple book. We want you to create a book that would explain to someone who knows very little about the current economic crisis, why the Occupy movement is happening. You do not have to argue whether you agree or not with their tactics, but why there is a crisis.
1) Create a title that addresses the question-Why is Occupy happening?
2) Determine what history and elements of the economic crisis you feel are necessary to answer the question.
3) Focus on the use of diagrams, charts, and other illustrations to explain your points.
4) Keep your analysis to a minimum-be very direct. For example, " The end of the Glass Steagall Act lead the way to creating" Too Big to Fail" banking institutions which resulted in huge bank bailouts."
5) You may type your text or neatly print in pen.
6) Be creative-use color-strong adjectives-thoughtful diagrams to explain your points.
7) You may use computer generated graphics, but originals are really fun! Simple stick figures can work!
8) You need a title page-think of your illustration and title.
9) Each book should have at least 6 pages of information.
10) Works cited page-that does not need to be annotated :) :)
11) Use class time wisely. You will have part of Thursday and all of Monday and Tuesday in class.

Mentor Meetings- Week of December 5th

Bring typed to do list to mentor meeting. Discuss list and have mentor sign it.

10 year plan

Please make sure you send me your 10 year plan bio. It is due by the end of the day on Wed. Carefully proofread your piece. Title the file with your last name. Put it in Ms. Hughes' inbox- find the folder entitled 10 year plan and than find the folder for your class.

Practice Presentations

Please come to class ready to present your portfolio reflection, whether it is written or oral.

Portfolio Due Date- March 25th

Proof of six cover sheets, postgrad plan and resume is due on Friday. The half sheet that is signed by your advisor is due to your government teacher by Friday.

Between now and Friday, you should put aside much time for practicing your speeches. Find a friend or get together as a group to practice your entire speech as many times as you can!

Senior Exhibition Day Reminders

1) Dress up- but no high heels-you need to walk
2) You must have guest passes for friends and alums who want to attend.
3) You must be in your presentation room by 5 minutes before your presentation
4) Seniors can only be in the library, cafeteria, hospitality room or presentations. NO WANDERING IN THE HALLS.
5) Keep your good clothes on when you go to the hospitality room. Only bring guardians into hospitality room-not enough food for all your friends and family
6) Do not forget to thank the parents in the hospitality room.
7) Copy power point slides
8) Video clips should be on flash drives
9) Use transition slides.
10) Use notecards-not pieces of paper
11) Do not use the podiums
12) Clearly answer your eq at the end with clear evidence-this is synthesis just like in your paper’s conclusion.
13) During Q and A refer to evidence in your answers. You may ask the person to rephrase or repeat the question, if you did not understand it.
14) Clearly know what you want your audience to understand at the end of your presentation. What is your goal? Convince them that your answer is logical and reasonable.

This detailed outline assignment is to help you properly prepare for your oral presentation.

1) Outline must be typed and at least two pages (single-spaced).
2) Focus on your transitions and analysis, since that was missing from most of the fifteen minute presentations.
3) Remember this is a persuasive speech!!! You analysis needs to connect to your eq and your answer.
4) Please follow the format. I am only providing you with the beginning of the outline.

I. Introduction- story about a woman who smoked marijuana when she was going through chemotherapy.
a. Transition- explain how marijuana helped relieve her nausea and enabled her to continue to eat. Add statistic about how many people use it to relieve nausea
b. Explain my personal questions about why the government would want to prevent people from receiving help.
II. State essential question "Should marijuana be legalized for medicinal purposes?
III. State that I am going to first provide information about how marijuana relieves certain health symptoms
A. Explain what is in the plant that relieves symptoms - add visual to help explain this point.
B. State statistics on the various types of symptoms that are relieved.
C. State statistics on how many people suffer from these diseases
D. Add commentary on how important it is for people to not suffer. Discuss how important nutrition is to cancer patients or how people with arthritis can lead full lives if they are not in pain.

The Positive and Negative Influences of Music

Music has the power to cause emotions, which are gripping and often irresistible; and these feelings affect our moods, affect our perceptions and in turn trigger behavioral responses. The presentation will be about the positives and negatives of the emotional and physical influences that music has on people.

Nicole Velazco has been at Oceana for three years, having spent her junior year in the Philippines. She hopes to be attending Brooks Institute of Photography in the fall of 2010.


The Lost Art of Fatherhood

Fatherhood in America is withering away and the art of teaching a boy how to be a man is forgotten. A boy’s mental development is affected by the absence of his male counter-part. The presenter will argue that the effect is neither positive nor negative alone, but a combination of the two.

Imani Mayfield is a student who has attended Oceana for all four years. He has come a long way and he isn’t perfect, but he is getting there. He plans to attend San Francisco State University in the fall, and pursue a career in Interior Design.
